Cultural Colour

indian_wedding-5882204xsmall.jpgIn the global melting pot of today there are lots of amazing traditions from many cultures. Ethnic inspired weddings are known for their glamour and glitz. For example, Indian style weddings incorporate jewels, bright colors and exotic fabrics. These accents are found in everything from the traditional bridal sari to the décor. There is no greater event in Indian culture than a wedding, and the extravagance of their celebration illustrates this. Indian couples that tie the knot in Canada usually adopt some Western traditions for their affair, for example, the wedding cake adapted from Western culture can now be found at many Indian celebrations. Indian fashion boasts an enormous selection of gorgeous accessories. If you're having a Western wedding, accessories will add flare to your bridesmaid's dresses and finish off each ensemble with an exotic and unique edge.

Fashions with bright oranges and turquoise offer the beauty of the traditional Indian look with a stylized Western edge.

Italians have wedding cake earrings, a custom that started in Venice. Handmade Italian glass beads use aventurine glass which contains copper filings to produce a sparking effect. Little flowers and icing swirls duplicate the appearance of the bride's wedding cake.

Chinese weddings have numerous traditions to follow before, during and after the wedding. Hanging a red cloth over the bride and grooms front doors symbolizes a happy ceremony is happening in their family. The groom showers the brides' family with gifts such as cakes, money and food. A Chinese tradition not done as often now is to place two coconuts and sprinkling white nuts called "lin chi" over the couples' new bed to symbolize good fortune.

Spanish brides like to have a flamenco flower in their hair, daring in colour to bring in a major focal point. The top tier of an Irish wedding cake should be an Irish whisky cake. During a traditional French wedding, the husband and wife drink to their toast from a specially engraved, double-handled goblet, which is usually passed down from generation to generation. At a German wedding, as the newlyweds leave the chapel they throw coins to the children watching. Portuguese couples still pass around the bride's shoe during the reception and stuff it with money to help the young couple with their honeymoon.

Why not let other cultures inspire you and add to the excitement of your day?

A German Wedding Custom Turned Fashion

So what’s the next new and upcoming culture craze and fashion trend? Well, it originates from the saying: Scherben bringen Glück, meaning “shards bring good luck.” This trend has led to the popularization and transformation of a German custom called Polterbend into elegant must have pieces that any girl can cherish and appreciate (as proven by etsy.com).

Polterbend (derived from the German verb poltern [which means to make a racket] + noun abend [evening]) is a popular German wedding custom in which on the night before the wedding the bride and groom hold an informal party and their family, friends, and guests all bring pieces made of porcelain to the brides’ house or that of her parents. The porcelain items (as well stoneware, flowerpots, or ceramic pieces) brought by the guests are then given to the engaged couple to break during the evening’s festivities, for good luck. After all the excitement of the Polterbend’s events, the couple is then responsible for cleaning up the pile of shards together, as this represents how the couple will have to work together through all the difficult conditions and situations in life…

Recently, Etsy has shown how they’ve embraced this tradition and turned this old German wedding custom into both a new form of fashion and art. By taking the shards of original porcelain items, designers of this art have turned the pieces into actual wearable jewelry and other delicate items. The pieces displayed on etsy.com range from porcelain beads, rings, and earrings all the way to porcelain gift boxes and bridal bouquet sets. The amazing thing about this is that the ideas of what to make each shard or shards into are endless, so watch out for this emerging trend.

These pieces of porcelain art and jewelry would be great gift ideas for a bride and groom to be as there is such a beautiful meaning behind the porcelain pieces that represent and symbolize blessings of luck. Gift ideas could range from matching male and female jewelry, a porcelain keepsake box with thoughtful little keepsakes or gifts inside, or even porcelain art pieces for their new home. Not only would these pieces be great gift ideas, many of the more classic and refined porcelain items would be great heirloom items that will surely stand the test of time and be cherished and passed down to each generation.
