Proposal Playoff Contest Winners

Shauna Smith & Russ Duncan

Russ and I were on holidays in England and Ireland for about three weeks in October 2007. Russ had carried the engagement ring with him the entire time, waiting for that “perfect moment”. On our last day in Ireland, we took a ferry to the Aran Islands. Russ later told me he had hoped to prose at a romantic spot along the Atlantic Ocean. However, on the way over I was seasick. I vomited all over the floor and myself while Russ held my hand and tried to comfort me. When we arrived on the island, the last thing I wanted to do was go on a romantic horse-and-buggy ride. In the end he proposed to me that night over a candlelight dinner in our hotel room. Even though we laugh about it all the time, it was a day I won’t forget

Julia Campbell & Clement Arsenault

As a nurse I work the night shift often. On this particular Friday morning I left work and decided to run some errands and pick up some Tim Hortons for Clement. I arrived at home looking tired, feeling gross and find a note on the door that says “Julia, please leave the lights off when you come in. Love you, Clem” I opened the door to find hundreds of candles and a path of rose petals from the door to the bedroom. I followed the path to the room to find Clement lying in bed waiting for me. (PS: Did I mention there was the great smells of a huge breakfast cooking?) He proposed to me there in bed and I was genuinely surprised!

Cheryl Jasman & George Koritarov

My fiancé George is from Bulgaria we met four year ago while living in Leduc. He has brought me home with him a couple of times. The last time we went was for his best friends wedding.  He had mentioned to me that we may or may not be giving a speech at the wedding and he would inform me of what to say (in Bulgarian).  That was all he mentioned of it.  On the day of the wedding George had sent his mother, sister and me out shopping for a few items so I didn't see him. I felt I was late and was upset about it because I missed the ceremonies and was being taken on detour after detour.  We finally arrived around 6:30 pm when the dinner and dance was beginning.  George left me sitting at the dinner table all alone and barely said two words to me for hours.  I do not speak the language but luckily we had a few friends who spoke English.  I was so mad, I didn't understand why he was ignoring me. Finally he came to get me to dance. I told him I was mad he was being a jerk and I was going to leave.  His response was “maybe there's a reason.” Now I'm furious! I walked away and went upstairs to play with the kids. Soon George and his mother come up and bring me down to the dance floor. I'm so mad I don't even notice they are playing his favourite song. Then the music stopped and everyone began holding hands a forming a circle around us. So the circle was formed with George and I are in the middle. Suddenly George has 2 champagne glasses, hands me one and I'm thinking that I might have to actually give a speech in front of all these people and he never told me what to say.  Then he cheers me and started to drink so I followed suit tipped my glass and there it was – my ring! Made from a gold coin which is a tradition passed down through the years. I instantly started crying and he got down on one knee, asked me and I obviously accepted.  Later I found he ignored me all night because he wanted to keep it a surprise and he is bad at keeping secrets so it was understandable. Everyone was in on it even the camera man so I have pictures too!

Jennifer Muir & Mathew Still

Mat and I have been together for a total of 7 1/2 years. Being that it was to be our first Christmas paying a mortgage and trying to afford gifts for our family and friends, I took a second job in retail, which meant I was working 20 hours a week on top of my normal 40 hours. For all December I felt as though Mat and I never saw each other, it was wake-up go to job number 1, go to job number 2, come home sleep and do it all over again. As I'm sure as everyone who braves the mall at Christmas is aware, the mall hours are extended, so I would sometimes not get home until close to midnight and Mat would already be sleeping. A few weeks before Christmas, when I asked Mat if there was anything he really wanted, he answered "just you home." One week before Christmas I came down with a terrible cold. At one point I had decided I just wanted to sleep through Christmas as everything was just so much work, and I needed a break. On December 22, I had a rather unpleasant day at work. By the end of the day, I had called Mat to tell him all I wanted to do was go home, take some NyQull, go to sleep and pretend this day never happened. When I got home from work and opened the door, the entire house was lit with what seemed like hundred of white candles. Mat met me at the door, took my purse and jacket, told me was sorry I had such a bad day, and he loved me. Then he took my hand and said "I want to show you something." In my head I was excited, because I thought Mat was going to offer to rub my feet; which I was very excited about! Mat led me to the living room where I sat down on the couch, he then got down on one knee - I started to cry. I couldn't believe this was actually happening; after 7 1/2 years, was Mat actually proposing to me?! I can't remember exactly what Mat said to me, but I remember exactly how it felt when he put the ring on my finger; exactly how it felt what I kissed him and hugged him yes; exactly what it felt like to sit there and sob for what felt like forever. When I finally stopped crying, I grabbed Mat's hand and said "Ok I need to see it now" (candlelight doesn't provide much light for inspecting a ring). Then Mat asked me, in the most serious tone, "First you have to help me blow out all these candles before we burn the house down".

Kristie McIntyre & Scott Leclerc

This is Scott the groom to be. I waited for Kristie to come home from work. I spent the time trying to take the perfect picture of the engagement ring. Once I found that special picture I then uploaded it on to the computer added the words “will you marry me Kristie” on to it then set the laptop to sleep mode. I then hid the ring in the bookshelf where I would be able to grab it without her seeing it. I picked her up from work and once we got home I asked her to turn on the computer so we could watch a TV show we had down loaded. When she sat down at the computer and she was faced away from me so I grabbed the ring and waited behind her for the computer to load up. Once I saw it reach the point were she would soon see my message I went down on one knee. She froze for what seemed like eternity, slowly turned around and when our eyes met I asked her to marry me and to complete my life. She started to cry, we stood up hugged and kissed each other...she said yes!
